Time is a shapeshifting trickster. Cruel and kind. We are always trying to make time, find time–but we keep on spending and wasting it. We count time, mark time, wonder how much of it we have left. It’s slippery like mercury; no matter how we squeeze on, we are always feeling it slip through our fingers. Time drags with drudgery, yet it blitzes by so fast when we are reveling in the good stuff. The climbs seem endless, yet those ribboned turns in the trees are ripped and gone before you can really even remember them. Time doesn’t seem linear in the context of pleasure and pain. Maybe you can squeak in a few more kilometers, next thing you know you’re late for dinner and that dirt crusted grin on your face won’t earn you a hall pass. So pedal harder, damnit. The clock is ticking.

One way around the trap of time is to move faster. That’s where whispers of the Hei Hei come in. Starting life in ‘91 as a titanium hardtail and eventually evolving into a carbon fiber full-suspension machine, bagging podiums and scoring championships by the fistful along the way, the Hei Hei has always been how we at Kona spell F-A-S-T. Now, we’re gunning for warp-speed.

Our intent with this bike was to position it as something “more” than just a race bike, because the Hei Hei embodies this incredible blend of sharpness and speed in a broadly capable, trail-friendly package that makes even the gnarliest climbs fun again. But then Cory Wallace went out and won ANOTHER 24 Hour World Championship aboard it, so, yeah. It does just fine as a race bike too. But the new Hei Hei CR is so much more than that. It couples Kona’s trademark long and low geometry with a feathery light but beautifully composed carbon fiber frame, then gets dressed up in a fitting ensemble of SRAM’s finest. Whether you are harvesting KOMs or singletrack saturated smiles, the Hei Hei CR is gonna stack them up fast.

The Hei Hei CR aims to change that. 120mm of carefully tuned rear travel delivers the speed and responsiveness you want with the support you need. We combined this new Swinger suspension with refined geometry and a precise tracking carbon fiber frame that lets you get as rowdy as you dare. Sensible spec tailored for trail riding nirvana delivers exceptional durability and value without packing on excess lard. This is modern mountain biking minimalism, living large. Step into the light.

Q: Will there be a 120mm fork travel, XC race, complete bike offering?
A: Kona is offering an opportunity for one, but no, not a complete bike. The carbon frameset is ready for your 120mm race dreams because we knew that those dreams are, like you, unique and complicated. You’ll ultimately appreciate a blank canvas while the more trail-oriented customer will appreciate the refined selection of versatile, trail worthy components already selected in the complete build.
Q: Why does the rear end of this new generation of Hei Hei move to a chasinstay/seatstay pivot instead of a flexstay?
A: If all you want to do is race, flexstays are compelling. But we realized we could meet our weight targets with the Swinger suspension, and provide a better riding, more compliant, more comfortable, and still eminently efficient suspension. We asked ourselves; would you rather have next-level confidence and capability? Or an extra palm-full of Sour Patch Kids? That’s the amount of weight we’re talking about.
Q: How much room does the seat tube have for dropper post insertion?
A: By redesigning the Hei Hei seat tube to be straighter, we increased dropper post insertion by up to 80mm, depending on frame size. This is part of our across-the-board quest to become known as the dropper post insertion rulers of the world.
Q: What other frame design changes are there?
A: Check out that downtube! The new design is straighter, slimmer, stiffer and much easier on the eyes. And there’s heaps more room inside the front triangle now for mounting stuff. Especially for you small frame-ers. That’s right, you can now fit TWO water bottles inside of a small Hei Hei frame. Some rear shocks require a flip to make room, but that’s easier than any ride that requires that amount of hydration.
A: Big ups to the thoughtful engineer who put an end to the internal routing bellyaching! The new design features tube-in-tube routing and a Y-connector for easy, fully guided slidin’. Plus, our updated cable path directs everything into a straighter, more SRAM-approved line. The perks? Easier maintenance, better shifting for longer, and a bit less swearing.
Q: Can I put a reservoir rear shock on either frame?
A: Yes, but the reservoir will limit the amount of water bottle mounting options.
Q: How many water bottles can the frame fit?
A: There are NINE bottle/accessory mounts inside the front triangle. You should be able to fit at least two bottles on all size frames, unless you go and slap a reservoir shock on there. Again, small frames require the non-reservoir shock to be flipped around in order to fit two bottles.
Q: Can you tell me more about the nine mounts?
A: Definitely! The possibilities! Depending on set up, the seat tube mount can accommodate a great set of tools or even a smaller (16oz or less) water bottle. We’ve thoughtfully placed extra bosses so you can mount your accessories in your ideal position – this allows the weight of the accessories to be low and centered. These extra bosses also allow more possibilities for custom frame bags. Use them all for an unbeatable fit and ditch those rough, dirt and lint-filled Velcro straps.
Q: Can I put a front Derailleur on this bike?
A: Nope. 1x only.
Q: What is the largest tire size that’ll fit?
A: This varies based on rim and tire profiles so it’s hard to say. WTB i30 rims with Maxxis 2.4”WT tires fit nicely. Just sayin’.
Q: Is there a max chainring size?
A: Yes, but it’s a big’un. 38T. Lay down them watts, Quadzilla.
Q: What is the chainline?
A: 55mm CL
Q: Is there a mullet version available?
A: No. What? No! We went with 29” hoops at each end of the Hei Hei because speed rules. Mullets are great for getting jibby, but when it comes to straightenin’ them curves and flattenin’ them hills, as Waylon Jennings so eloquently put it, big wheels are the way to go. (Someday the mountain may get ‘em but the law never will…)
